OP ED Globalization
Project Description
In this project we started by doing lots of general globalization research and preparing how to right an OP ED. Did many complex text work and research on the idea or Jihad vs Mc World. Then form there we picked a thesis statement that would go in our OP ED, but used this statement to guide all the research to find all the evidence we would need to talk about and support our thesis statement. Thesis had to be arguable, for example mine was “when large corporations outsource to decrease prices it devastates the economy and middle class family”. Then we created a political cartoon that went along with what we talk about in our OP ED.

Learning Reflection
I have gained lots of new understanding about globalization over this project and one of them is how powerful globalization is. I had never really realized what globalization was or how much it impacts my everyday life before. As well how big of an impact it has on the economy like prices, developing, innovating and unemployment. It affects our society with culture, religion and morals, I would have never thought of that if it wasn't for this project. It’s helped open my eyes for things out of this country, and larger global events. How there is a lot of important things going on that are out of our little world of the United States.

Cartoon Reflection
Looking back at my first draft of my cartoon and my final draft I see a big difference. The first one was very confusing, lots of things going on, message was unclear and didn’t use very many element that cartoons have. So in my final draft I tried to incorporate more things like per portion, captions/labels, exaggeration, irony, analogy, and most important trying to make it clear for the reader. At first I had the outsourcing companies on a ship as well with the China and Mexico ships out in the distance. But this was not very clear so I have to incorporate lots of speech bubbles that making it very busy and almost more confusing, then that’s when I got the idea for the draft you see above. With the corporations on an island with the Mexico and China ships in their harbor, giving them the jobs while at the same time you have the Corporations shooting down the Middle Class Sailor ship and not helping them but helping Mexico and China instead by supplying them with jobs that they took away for the middle class Americans as a result of outsourcing. |
OP ED Reflection
The writing I did in this project was a lot different then what I have done before. It was for the most part very short compared to for school I’m normally writing at least 3 to 4 page papers. As well I have never had to write anything that was supposed to be persuasive before. This OP ED we wrote was supposed to be convincing and use evidence to make are opinion more convincing by using the evidence to back up our opinions and views. I think I can apply this type of writing in any other humanities paper I write as well in the future when I’m trying to express my opinions in a piece of writing or in conversations with others, like seminars to make myself more reliable, convincing because you can’t argue about facts but you can about opinions. |

Story, Research & Art Piece Summery
My story “Silhouettes on the Horizon” is placed in Moronoto, Tanzania 1904. It’s the story of a girl named Arafa and her dad Asanta that is a farmer. During this time the Germans were in control over the area. Germans made locals work for them to farm cotton. So her father and many others were having to grow their own crops plus the cotton cash crops for the Germans. She begins to notices strange behavior in her father so she started to almost spy on him. Hearing things like her father and many more wanting to start a rebellion against the Germans, and try to gain independence. And the more she starts finding out the more upset she became. And the more flaws she started to see in there plan. But in the end she had no control over what was going to happen but she still tried to stop him.
In my research about Tanzania I learned about many historical events and as well just what it’s like over there. One thing that I found of interested to me was the MajiMaji rebellion around 1904. This was the natives trying to gain independence over the Germans. The interesting part about this war/rebellion was that the natives only had spears, arrows and cap guns compared to the Germans high powered guns. So they came up with a solution, this solution involved spiritual powers. They had the Witch Doctor make them a mixture of castor oil, millet seeds and water, this mixture was supposed to turn German bullets into water and protect them. This historical event was what I based my story around.
My art peace represents a native hut in Tanzania around 1904. But more specifically, it represents the hut of a witch doctor. Showing the significance of witch doctors in the MajiMaji rebellion. They believed so strongly in their religion that they trusted their lives with it. (To keep reading click Full Paper Link)
